Why We Ditched the Template and Built a Custom Theme for Airifix
A behind-the-scenes look at why we chose performance and purpose over convenience — and why we couldn’t wait to show you.
If you’ve visited our shop recently, you might have noticed things look a little different around here. That’s because we’ve made one of the biggest behind-the-scenes changes in Airifix history: we’ve moved to a fully custom-built theme, designed and engineered specifically for what we do — sell precision parts for MINI Coopers.
And honestly? We’re buzzing about it.
The Problem with Off-the-Shelf Themes
For years, like most small e-commerce businesses, we ran our shop on a pre-built theme from a theme marketplace. It worked. Sort of. The pages loaded, the products displayed, and orders came through. But underneath the surface, things weren’t great.
Speed was an issue. Every theme from a theme shop is built to do everything for everyone — restaurants, fashion brands, law firms, you name it. That means bloated code, dozens of features we never used, and page load times that were far from ideal. When you’re browsing parts for your Gen 2 Cooper S at 11pm on your phone, you don’t want to wait three seconds for a page to render. You want it now.
Design felt generic. We’d tweak colours here, swap a font there, but the site never truly felt like Airifix. It felt like a template wearing our logo. Our brand has a personality — it’s dark, it’s technical, it’s built by enthusiasts for enthusiasts — and a generic theme couldn’t capture that.
Customisation hit walls. Every time we wanted to do something specific — like adding fitment badges to products, building a proper mobile experience, or redesigning how our product categories were presented — we’d hit the limits of what the theme allowed. Workarounds piled up, plugins multiplied, and the whole thing became fragile.
We knew something had to change.
The Decision: Build It From Scratch
After a lot of research and a few sleepless nights, we made the call: no more templates. We were going to invest in a purpose-built theme — one that was designed around our products, our customers, and the way people actually shop for MINI parts.
It wasn’t the easy choice. A custom build takes longer, costs more upfront, and requires a level of trust in the team doing the work. But we believed it was the right choice for the long term.
Finding the Right Partner
We needed a team that understood not just web development, but the intersection of performance, design, and e-commerce. After evaluating several agencies, we chose Bytetect to take on the project.
What stood out about Bytetect was their approach. They didn’t just ask “what colours do you want?” — they dug into how our customers browse, what devices they use, how they search for parts, and what friction points existed in the old design. They understood that for a shop like ours, every millisecond of load time matters, every pixel of the product card matters, and the mobile experience isn’t secondary — it’s primary.
From the dark, premium aesthetic to the custom product grids with fitment badges and generation filters, every element was built with intent. Nothing is there because a template included it by default. Everything is there because it serves a purpose.
It’s Not Finished — And That’s OK
Now, here’s the honest bit: the new theme isn’t finished yet. There are still pages being refined, features being added, and polish being applied. Some corners are rougher than we’d like. Some things will change in the coming weeks.
So why are we showing it to you now?
Because we’re genuinely proud of what’s been built so far, and we didn’t want to wait any longer to share it. The core experience — browsing products, searching for parts, checking out — is faster and better than it’s ever been. The design finally feels like us. And we’d rather let you in on the journey than hide behind a “coming soon” page for another three months.
